Handmade Cards

Happy Chinese New Year

I was really looking forward to making this card as I wanted to use the bold colours that are associated with Chinese New Year. I wouldn’t normally choose black for a card base, but I’m so glad I did as I love the contrast with the red and gold.

How I made this card:

I blended three colours of distress ink on to watercolour card, then flicked water and perfect pearls to add shimmery water droplets. I then heat set it and cut a square with a stitched square die.

I put this aside whilst I die cut out the strings and bows from gold glitter paper. I used stick it adhesive on the back first as they are so fiddly to attach to the card otherwise. I used Versamark ink to stamp the lanterns, then heat embossed them in gold embossing powder. I added stick it adhesive to the back of the card, then die cut them out.

I cut a card base slightly larger than the red background so there would be a small border around the edge. I wanted some more black on the card, so die cut a smaller stitched square and cut out the middle to create a frame. This is one of my favourite parts of the card as it really draws the eye towards the centre.

I toyed with adding the sentiment directly to the red inked piece, but you only really have one chance to get it right and I didn’t want to risk ruining it, so instead I stamped and heat embossed the greeting on to vellum.

Once I’d put all the pieces on the card, I finished it with a sprinkling of sequins.
